A Revolutionary Approach to Preventing Transmission of a Cancer-Causing Virus

Some develop genital warts, but the infection generally goes away on its own and many people never have health problems. Others can cause cancer in different areas of the body, including the genitals and throat, and are considered to be high-risk.

'People really need to realize that this is a serious concern'.

From the start, clinicians have run into some parental and political roadblocks because the vaccine, which is recommended for preteens, protects against genital human papillomavirus - a virus transmitted through sexual contact. This virus responsible for particular types of genital cancer, causing infected people to be in a high-risk state.

To estimate the prevalence of HPV infection among USA adults aged 18 to 59, the researchers used data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey from 2011 to 2014.

"The next step is to increase awareness of the high prevalence of high-risk genital and oral HPV in our general USA population so individuals will realize that this is a serious problem and they will get their children vaccinated in early adolescence before they become sexually active", McQuillan said.

Dr. Lois Ramondetta, a professor of gynecologic oncology at MD Anderson Cancer Center in Texas, told NBC News previous year: "There is an epidemic of HPV related cancers in men, specifically those of the tonsil and the back of the tongue".

Pink diamond sells for a world record $71.2M
Tobias Kormind of 77 Diamonds, an online diamond jewelery seller, said he expects it to sell for more than $100 million. Sotheby's chose to put the diamond back up for sale due to the rising demand for expensive gemstones in Asian markets.

The Gardasil vaccination is most effective if administered before a young person becomes sexually active. Almost 23-percent have the high risk strain that can cause cancer in both men and women.

The survey also showed that men were the most affected by HPV when compared to women, while black people were considerably more affected when compared to other ethnic and racial groups.

More than one in five USA adults are infected with a high-risk form of HPV, a shocking new CDC report reveals.

Although the HPV vaccine prevents about 70 percent of all cervical cancers, too few girls and boys are getting it, McQuillan said. All girls and boys aged 11 or 12 should get the recommended three-dose series of HPV vaccine, the CDC advises. Though recent numbers have shown high HPV rates, vaccinating adolescents has been the proven way to bring these totals down.

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved two HPV vaccines namely Cervarix and Gardasil. "The program is newer for boys, however, and we expect this rate to increase over time", she said. "It is a cancer vaccine", Paskett said.

Einstein, who is also assistant dean of the clinical research unit at New Jersey Medical School, has been an investigator on a number of HPV vaccine clinical trials and was on the guidelines writing group for the American Cancer Society and a consultant to the World Health Organization.
