Cop shot after man opens fire in Ohio nursing home

The male shooter reportedly turned the gun on himself after shooting multiple people inside the nursing home. None of the 23 residents at the facility are believed to have been injured.

Ohio Attorney General Mike DeWine said the suspected shooter is from Utica.

The 36 year old called to a report of a man with a gun.

DiSario had been chief for about three weeks, Thorp said, and was a father of six with a seventh child on the way.

The Dispatch reports authorities have closed off much of the area, and Kirkersville Elementary School was placed on lockdown.

Friday's events have shaken the community of Kirkersville, located off Interstate 70 in southern Licking County and home to fewer than 600 people. However, NBC4 reporter Dan Pearlman says all of the students who attend classes there have been safely moved to Watkins Middle Schools. When the sheriff informed the district about the shooting, all the kids were taken to the middle school and subsequently released to their parents. "We will assist in any way we can", Columbus Police said on Twitter.

Ohio Gov. John Kasich (KAY'-sihk) has ordered flags flown at half-staff following the fatal shooting of a village police chief in an attack that also killed two nursing home employees. "Grateful for law enforcement's quick response".

The source, who would have knowledge of the situation, said the Kirkersville police officer died from the wounds after being in critical condition.

At approximately 9:30 a.m., officers said the situation had "been contained".

The Columbus Dispatch and other OH media are reporting there is an an active shooter situation in Kirkersville in Licking County and that the gunman is down. According to the Ohio Department of Health, the facility holds 24 beds, which are certified for both Medicare and Medicaid.
