Google Announces Standalone Virtual Reality Headset

Google worked with processor maker Qualcomm and VR headset pioneer HTC to develop a customised version of the HTC Vive.

Given that the Daydream headset isn't arriving immediately, we believe there is adequate time available for the concerned ones to churn out more contents.

A standalone VR headset is one that would allow more consumers to try VR technology-without requiring they have an a computer that could run the content nor a smartphone.

Sadly, neither Google nor its partners were willing to share details on pricing and formal availability beyond a rough commitment to launching commercial headsets before the end of the year. More than two million students have taken virtual field trips with Expeditions using Cardboard, and this fall, we're bringing AR lessons to schools through our Pioneer Program.

That affordable move redirected the attacks to MalwareTech's server, which operates as a "sinkhole" to keep malware from escaping. The attack appeared to exploit a vulnerability purportedly identified for use by the U.S.

Google is ramping up its work on virtual and augmented reality (VR and AR respectively) with its Daydream platform, having added support for the Samsung Galaxy S8 and revealed partnerships with Lenovo and HTC to build standalone headsets.

The standalone HTC Vive and Lenovo's VR headset will both be launching later this year, featuring Google's Daydream software platform. All that set-up can be a pain, but this new venture hopes to get you into VR with a press of a button. They are free-form and wireless, yet still capable of providing full 360 degree tracking using what Google calls WorldSense.

There's no word on how "World Sense" functions, but the site says that all sensors used to track head movements will be located onboard the device.

Tango is also one of the core technologies behind our new Visual Positioning Service (VPS), which helps devices quickly and accurately understand their location indoors. While GPS provides directions to a place, a device with VPS can direct the user directly to objects, such as an item in a store. This development is expected to broaden virtual reality's horizon beyond video games to a much larger audiences.
