'He Is Something': Trump Visits Pope Francis At The Vatican

In the first picture, Francis looks like he has a root canal appointment scheduled for right after the Trump meeting.

First Lady Melania Trump and First Daughter Ivanka Trump wore head coverings when meeting with the Pope, but did not do so during their meeting in Saudi Arabia.

The two exchanged gifts after the meeting.

Trump gave the pope a boxed set of five first edition books by slain United States civil rights leader Martin Luther King. He also gifted the pontiff a piece of granite from the Martin Luther King. Jr.

As the pair parted, an effusive President Trump told the Pontiff; "I won't forget what you said". The meeting came a year after the pope said Trump "is not Christian", criticizing his plan for a border wall.

"As religious leaders, we are called to unmask violence that masquerades as purported sanctity", Francis said April 28 at Cairo's Al-Azhar, the revered, 1,000-year-old seat of Sunni Islam learning that trains clerics and scholars from around the world.

Francis said Trump should be thinking of creating a bridge not a barrier and called people who believed in walls "not Christian".

"That's so attractive", the president replied. It was also noted that Trump's meeting ran for thirty minutes, almost a half hour less than Barack Obama had with him.

Trump, who has threatened to ignore the Paris accords on emissions and described global warming as a hoax, vowed to read them.

It also opposes his plan to build a wall on the USA border with Mexico. Yes, he's the President of the United States, but this still seems like a tough sell for Pope Frank.

Department of Justice acknowledged on Monday what legal experts have said for months: In most cases, the department can't do that. It sent warning letters to nine localities in April.

"One offers peace of dialogue, the other security of arms", he said on Twitter, apparently referencing the $110 billion weapons deal the US president concluded with Saudi Arabia days ago.

Afterwards, the Trumps were given a private tour of the Sistine Chapel and St Peter's Basilica.

Trump and Gentiloni met a month ago, during the prime minister's state visit to Washington. Over the weekend he stopped in Saudi Arabia, where he delivered an address to Muslim leaders, and Monday through Tuesday he visited Israel and the West Bank and met with Israeli and Palestinian leaders.

Trump and Pope Francis appeared to put aside their differences Wednesday during their meeting at the Vatican Wednesday on the third leg of an exhausting five-country oversees trip that continues to Brussels later in the afternoon.

"He is something", Trump added.

Trump's softer stance on environmental regulations is at odds with Francis' view that climate change is caused mostly by human activity.

"Head spinning: Never has a US president expressed so much confidence in a conflict-ending peace agreement with so little prospect of success", tweeted Aaron David Miller who was a USA negotiator on the Middle East in both Republican and Democratic administrations.

Francis then gave Trump several books, including a book on the environment that he said he gives to all Catholics on family, the gospel and "care of our common home, the environment".

His effort to broker peace comes early in a Trump administration distracted by a domestic political firestorm, part of it self-ignited by the president's own comments. "We're loving Italy very much", Trump said at that stop.
