President Trump says meeting Pope Francis 'honor of a lifetime'

The Pope welcomed Trump to the Vatican, Wednesday, indulging in handshakes before ushering the president into his study for their first face-to-face meeting, reports said.

As a symbol of the increased respect for the head of the Catholic Church, now both Trump's personal and presidential Twitter accounts display an image of him sitting across from Pope Francis, smiling.

When first lady Melania Trump finally moves into the White House this summer, she will become its first Roman Catholic resident in more than 50 years.

Trump met with Francis Wednesday for a half hour.

The Trumps were at the Vatican to take part in a tour of St Peter's Basilica as part of an ongoing world tour, which has so far taken them to Saudi Arabia and Israel.

The dessert is obviously very rich - could the pope have been poking fun at the president's stature?

Trump included close family members and some long-time aides in the meeting, in a gesture being interpreted as a demonstration of his commitment to loyalists. "I will say what I think, he will say what he thinks, but I never, ever, wanted to make a judgment without hearing the person".

They choose mayors and decide on budgets and development projects, as well as oversee local cultural and religious activities. The elections remain tightly controlled, however, and many candidates are excluded during a pre-election vetting process.

The picture of the two leaders may not be the only one to be remembered as iconic. Trump's wife Melania, daughter Ivanka and son-in-law Jared Kushner accompanied the USA president and met the Pope as well.

Others made a decision to Photoshop the image after all. He frames climate change as an urgent moral crisis and blames global warming on an unfair, fossil fuel-based industrial model that harms the poor the most. Trump said, "We can use peace".

However, the first lady's spokeswoman, Stephanie Grisham, today confirmed to CNN that Trump is indeed Catholic.

Potica is a decadent traditional Slovenian cake, mostly eaten on special occasions. The pope also gave Trump a medallion depicting an olive branch as a symbol of peace. She also presented Pope Francis with rosary beads for the Pontiff to bless.

Mr Trump gave the pope a boxed set of five first-edition books by murdered USA civil rights leader Martin Luther King.

The Trump team is due to fly to Brussels this afternoon for meetings with European Union and North Atlantic Treaty Organisation officials before returning to Italy late tomorrow for the G7 summit in Sicily on Friday and Saturday.
