To many Americans, Memorial Day has lost its meaning

She hopes Memorial Day will remind people of the sacrifices veteran made and help them be mindful of their freedoms. All deserve our thanks and should be in our thoughts this Memorial Day.

American Legion Post 18 Chaplain Wayne Trissler led the prayer during this year's ceremony.

Unlike the soldiers from other wars who returned home as heroes to celebrations and parades, when the veterans of the Vietnam War returned home, if they were greeted at all, it was with verbal and physical abuse by individuals that were still protesting the war.

Dozens gathered Monday at Rose Hill Cemetery for the American Legion Burton Woolery Post 18′s annual Memorial Day service.

Unfortunately, much of the nation has lost touch with this original objective of the day, especially for those who have no close ties to the military.

But during World War I, the holiday was changed to commemorate Americans who fought and died in any war.

If you're a bit hazy on the difference between Memorial Day and Veterans Day, you're not alone.

In the process, they shot themselves into the Stanley Cup final opposite Nashville, the series starting at home next Monday. The teams remained scoreless through the first overtime, as the Penguins held an 8-2 shots-on-goal advantage over Ottowa.

Originally known as Decoration Day, it started following the civil war and officially became a federal holiday in 1971.

Maj. Gen. John A. Logan declared May 30 Decoration Day in 1868, as a time to decorate the graves of the nation's fallen service members.

"He also says he's joined by his wife and children in encouraging all Nebraskans to travel safely, to buckle up, and to never drink and drive as they travel over the holiday weekend".

On June 28, 1968, Congress passed the Uniform Monday Holiday Act, which moved four holidays, including Memorial Day, from the traditional dates to a specified Monday in order to create a convenient three-day weekend. The people who served in the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines and Coast Guard put their own lives on hold and gave up time with their families so they could serve and protect their country.

Inspired by the poem, Moina Michael was said to have conceived the idea of wearing red poppies to honor those who made the ultimate sacrifice. The war dead are all around us but mostly forgotten 364 days of the year, until Decoration Day comes 'round again.

"Whether we observe the occasion through public ceremony or through private prayer, Memorial Day leaves few hearts unmoved".
