Bark for Life raises money for cancer research

Newton and McDonald County residents raised thousands of dollars at this years, Relay for Life.

Bernier explained the goal of the Relay for Life teams, and how the commitment of the volunteers is integral to the success of the American Cancer Society. As the survivors walk, other event participants will cheer them on in a demonstration of support and celebration. That research is performed at facilities like Vanderbilt Medical Center, St. Jude Children's Research Hospital and the University of Tennessee Health Science Center.

Opening ceremonies featured words from leaders and supporters before the survivors and caretakers took the first lap.

Enthusiasm reached a fevered pitch on the Brewster High School campus Saturday evening when Putnam's newest Relay for Life, a fundraiser that benefits the American Cancer Society, stepped off on the school's track. He imagined teams gathering together and doing the same thing in their communities and that is what Relay for Life became. "We're here to raise money for the American Cancer Society", said Eric Witham, one of the event organizers. The walk continued until midnight.
