Buffalo Sabres Have Acquired Nathan Beaulieu from Montreal

After shipping Mikhail Sergachev to the Lightning for Jonathan Drouin, Montreal has now traded away Nathan Beaulieu to the Buffalo Sabres for a third-round pick in 2017 (68th overall). Put the two together and now the Sabres added to their defense while the Canadiens will get something in return.

Beaulieu was the 17th overall pick back in 2011 and had spent his entire National Hockey League career with the Canadiens until now.

The Canadiens will receive Buffalo's third-round pick (No. 68 overall) in next week's draft as part of the deal, which was announced Saturday. After finishing his final season with the St. John's Sea Dogs, Beaulieu split time between Montreal and their AHL affiliate, the Hamilton Bulldogs.

Beaulieu, a 24-year-old former first-round pick, set career-highs in goals (four) and assists (24) in an up-and-down 2016-17 season. "After just a handful of games, [then head coach] Michel Therrien decided he had seen enough".

Beaulieu had 28 points (4-24) in 74 games last season.

Teams were allowed to either protect 7 forwards, 3 defensemen and 1 goalie, or 8 skaters and 1 goalie.

On Sunday at 10:30am, the National Hockey League announced which players each team had chosen to protect from the upcoming expansion draft.
