Clarke Not Taking DHS Job

Clarke, a longtime Trump supporter who spoke at the 2016 Republican National Convention, is a controversial figure who described the Black Lives Matter movement as "the enemy" in an op-ed post and has been critical of government institutions.

The article quotes Clarke adviser Craig Peterson as saying that Clarke "rescinded his acceptance of the agency's offer to join DHS as an assistant secretary".

Clarke's job offer at the DHS was never publicly announced by the Trump administration, but Clarke had announced on a Wisconsin radio station in May that he accepted the post.

Clarke previously said he would start the DHS job in June.

Milwaukee County Sheriff David Clarke reportedly has withdrawn his name from consideration for an assistant secretary position at the Department of Homeland Security. Clarke says he believes he could help promote President Donald Trump's agenda "in a more aggressive role".

Clarke's adviser Craig Peterson said the sheriff had already formally notified the Secretary of Homeland Security John F. Kelly about his decision. Trump and Clarke reportedly met in Wisconsin on Tuesday and discussed other roles in which Clarke

It's unclear if Sheriff Clarke will continue to lead Milwaukee County Sheriff's Office, where he has served as its top cop since 2002.

Chris Abele, the Milwaukee County executive, said in a statement at the time, "The appointment of Sheriff Clarke to a position meant to build partnership and engagement is not a decision made by someone interested in partnership or engagement".

The announcement of his potential appointment in mid-May came shortly after an investigation into the death of a Milwaukee County Jail inmate who died of dehydration.
