Dozens injured in Lakeside deck collapse

Dozens injured in Lakeside deck collapse

The incident occurred at a residence on Presbyterian Camp Road, located between Lakeside and Rollins on the shore of Flathead Lake.

Witness Leslie Dillon says dozens of people gathered on the deck overlooking Flathead Lake after the service ended when the 10-foot high structure fell.

On Saturday afternoon, emergency services from Polson, Kalispell, Evergreen, and several other departments responded to a call of a deck collapse at Glacier Camp in Lakeside off of Highway 93 S. Authorities now say more than 30 people were taken to hospitals after the second-story deck of a Montana lodge collapsed during a memorial event for a firefighter. Dillon says many of her friends and relatives were taken away in ambulances.

Determining the cause of the collapse will be up to the resort's insurer, Lake County Sheriff Don Bell said.

He added that he saw first responders from across the northwest Montana attending to the hurt - which ranged from children to elderly.

The crowd at the time was gathered on the deck to remember William Nickel, a longtime Flathead Valley firefighter who died in April.
