Graham Rahal wins 1st of 2 Detroit Grand Prix IndyCar races

Josef Newgarden, driving for Team Penske, was fourth in the only auto with a Chevy engine among the top seven in the 22-car field. The IndyCar series leader will start outside of Rahal this afternoon while Indianapolis 500 victor Takuma Sato jumped into the 3rd spot on the grid.

Rahal logged a 114.374mph lap in 1:13.9681 to earn the P1 Award and better Simon Pagenaud's mark from previous year by 0.0698 seconds.

Immediately after the first group had completed their qualifying runs an incident between Pagenaud and Sato was investigated by the race stewards, with Pagenaud in particular unhappy with Sato for slowing during the session.

He finished fourth in Dual one in 2016, third in Dual two in 2015 and second in Dual one in 2014.

Rahal ultimately crossed the line six seconds clear of the field to become IndyCar's seventh different victor in the opening seven races of the season, as well as coming good on his pre-race promise that he could dominate.

The 22-car field didn't make it through the first lap without trouble, but the damage was minimal.

Tiger Woods asleep at wheel of car before Florida arrest
Smith had some choice words for Tiger Woods following the golfer's DUI arrest Monday. "I feel bad for Tiger", Jack Nicklaus said. A breathalyzer test registered.000 and toxicology results, as well as those from a urine test, were not yet available.

For Dixon, he will now be resting the ankle and preparing himself for more of the same on Sunday for race two, although he hopes to improve the performance of his vehicle to be in with a better shot of victory.

Helio Castroneves, who posted the fastest lap before a penalty took away his fastest time, finished seventh.

He raced to his fifth career victory and fourth in two-plus years for Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing.

"Everything went according to plan today", said Rahal, who started from the pole position after capturing the Verizon P1 Award with a track-record lap this morning.

It is also the first street-course victory by the Rahal team since co-owner Bobby Rahal won the inaugural Belle Isle race 25 years ago. Hopefully get some good rest tonight and obviously qualifying tomorrow is going to be key for the race.

IndyCar will conclude its only doubleheader of the season Sunday.
